<p>A <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/10/comScore_Reports_August_2011_U.S._Mobile_Subscriber_Market_Share" target="_blank">new report from comScore</a> just came out that shows text message usage is still on the rise in the US. I’ve embedded the comScore report below, which also shows the change in browser usage, downloading apps, accessing social networking sites, playing games and listening to music on the mobile phone.</p>
<p>What’s interesting about this comScore report is that not one action on the mobile phone is trending downwards. A lot of this is due to the <a href="http://www.tatango.com/blog/smartphone-penetration-hits-forty-percent/" target="_blank">increased adoption of smartphones</a>, and possibly the <a href="http://www.tatango.com/blog/time-spent-on-mobile-devices-outpaces-newspapers-and-magazines/" target="_blank">sharp decline of people spending time with older media</a> such as newspapers and magazines.</p>

<p>Ever since Amazon launched its mobile offerings (and Amazon Prime), slowly but surely my buying habits have shifted towards Jeff Bezos’ company which is on its way <a href="http://gigaom.com/2011/07/27/amazon-in-2011-is-where-walmart-was-in-1991/">to become the new new Walmart</a>.</p>
<p>The fact is that because we got easy to use shopping apps on our phones, we are all seeing a big change in our shopping behavior. The biggest manifestation of this trend is going to be during the holiday season this year, according to Google’smobile ads division. In a blog post, they predict some major gains for mobile-based shopping.</p>
<ul>
<li>15% of total “Black Friday” searches will be from mobile devices.</li>
<li>44% of total searches for last minute gifts and store locator terms will be from mobile devices.</li>
<li>65% of high-end device users report that they have used their device to find a business, and then made a purchase at that business in person.</li>
<li>Greater than 33% of both smartphone users and tablet users plan to start their shopping before Thanksgiving.</li>
</ul>
<p>As we wrote about earlier, <a href="http://gigaom.com/2011/04/26/smartphones-are-local-search-and-shopping-devices/">smartphones have turned into local shopping devices</a> and during the holidays, the impulse to reach for your smartphone is even more powerful. With less time and more urgency to find gifts as the holidays approach, it makes sense that smartphones, already very intent-driven devices, will be become even more popular as shopping tools.</p>
<p>Elsewhere:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://gigaom.com/mobile/how-mobile-commerce-can-harness-the-tablet/">Forrester Research noted</a> that tablets already account for 20 percent of e-commerce sales, despite the fact that only 9 percent of shoppers own tablets.</li>

<p>There’s been a lot of debate regarding CTR for banner ads on mobile devices.  Many argue that mobile users click on banner ads by mistake and therefore can’t compete with traditional banner ads viewed on PCs.  A new study out by MediaMind, however, aims to debunk this myth.</p>

<p>The company analyzed 230 million impressions of the same banner ads on both mobile devices and traditional browsers and found that the average CTR for mobile ads was .61% compared to .07% for browsers.  MediaMind disagrees with the notion of errant clicks on mobile devices and instead says that mobile is simply “experiencing the same kind of new and fascinating curve that banner ads had when they first asked people to punch the monkey.”</p>
<p>The company also says that the position of the ads on mobile devices plays a huge part as well.  ”Mobile banners aren’t just on top of the innovation curve, but also occupy a bigger portion of the screen relative to browser based banners.  In many cases, there is only one banner on the page.  Furthermore, people tend to browse with their phone closer to their eyes, unlike the screen of a laptop or a desktop.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s axiomatic that you find out how good a business really is when it has already screwed up once; the speed and nature of the fix show the firm’s true nature. After shipping you the wrong item, do they just offer to refund your return shipping? Do they overnight the correct item to you, no questions asked? How quickly do they resolve the problem?</p>
<p>It turns out that the way companies respond to bad online reviews makes a difference, too. As reported by Mediapost, a Harris survey showed that 18% of those who posted a negative review of the merchant and got a reply ended up becoming loyal customers and buying more.</p>
<p>In addition, and perhaps an even bigger surprise, nearly 70% of those consumers receiving replies reversed the negative content either by deleting the bad review or posting a second positive one. Considering the power of word of mouth, and in particular negative word of mouth, that’s a stunning accomplishment.</p>
<p>While salvaging one out of five unhappy customers is a laudable goal (and, I suspect, a lot cheaper than prospecting for new customers), I have no doubt the benefits extend far beyond that number. Countless other buyers reading reviews will see a proactive response to a problem instead of an unanswered (and apparently ignored) complaint. (Indeed, when I’m evaluating an online purchase I usually visit the firm’s forum to see how quickly and effectively they respond to problem reports. Unanswered complaints are a huge red flag.)</p>
<p>Without a doubt, this issue is a no brainer. Monitor where your customers post – Twitter, Facebook, blogs, review sites, etc. – and engage them quickly and constructively. Don’t try to win an argument about who’s right; remember, you may have just ruined important plans, and the customer is upset. Offer a simple but sincere apology, and state how the problem can be resolved with minimum customer pain. Not only do you have chance to retain that customer, but you’ll have influenced many others as well.</p>
